Acer Palmatum ‘Butterfly’ is a small green leafed maple with cream and pink variegation and is a vigorous upright vase shaped grower. The Butterfly is truly the best variegated Japanese maple available for two reasons, it changes color and the individual leaves are of different shapes and sizes. This is simply a breathtaking tree for large patio containers or as a specimen tree. In spring the foliage starts out with a base color of sage green that is outlined in a soft pink which will turn white by summer. The outline of the foliage will then turn crimson and within a few weeks the entire leaf will turn a rich magenta. If the beautiful variegation of foliage is not enough the ‘Butterfly’ is truly unique in that no two leaves are alike in color or shape. Some leaves are twisted and curled like wings of butterflies and when the wind blows threw the foliage the tree really comes to life. The ‘Butterfly’ is an absolute treasure to behold in the garden. 'Butterfly' thrives in full sun in the north, partial shade farther south. It is best planted in moist well drained soil. It's a slow grower, giving you plenty of time to enjoy its petite stature and beautiful foliage in a large patio container. ‘Butterfly’ will work well in as a specimen tree in a small garden setting.
